I’m Mike—the name most people know me by. If you met me in Egypt, you might know me as Islam. In China, friends call me Lao Mai (老麦, Lǎo Mài). Different names, same person: the founder of Gear Doctors®.
I didn’t grow up outdoorsy. For years I lived a normal corporate life and told myself camping was a luxury. Then, during a rough patch, a friend dragged me on a short trip. One night under a big sky and everything changed: the noise quieted, my thoughts cleared, and I felt that rare mix of energy and calm you only get in nature.
Back in the city, I kept that feeling alive. I hiked deserts on Egyptian safaris, learned simple campcraft, and later, when life took me to China, I explored weekend trails and quiet lakes between factory visits. The pattern was obvious: nature isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity, like reading, meditation, or exercise.
Gear Doctors was born to make that necessity easier to access. We build ever-improving, responsibly made outdoor gear with input from fellow campers around the world. Whether you know me as Mike, Islam, or Lao Mai, my mission is the same: help more people step outside, breathe deeper, and bring that calm back home.
